Every October, over 500 hot air balloons fill Albuquerque's sky in a spectacle that draws nearly a million visitors. Timing Your Visit

The Fiesta runs for nine days in early October. The two events you should not miss are the Dawn Patrol and Mass Ascension, which happen on weekend mornings. Arrive at Balloon Fiesta Park by 5:30 AM — yes, it is early, but watching hundreds of balloons inflate and lift off against the Sandia Mountains at sunrise is genuinely unforgettable.

Special Shape Rodeos, held mid-week, feature balloons shaped like animals, cartoon characters, and everyday objects. They are especially fun and slightly less crowded than weekend mass ascensions.

Local Tips

Dress in layers — October mornings in Albuquerque start cool and warm up quickly. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will walk extensively across the launch field. If you live in Nob Hill, consider taking the Park & Ride shuttle from UNM rather than driving to the event. It eliminates parking stress entirely.

The Special Shape Glowdeo and Balloon Glow transform the field into a luminous wonderland after dark, with balloons firing their burners in synchronized patterns. The accompanying fireworks show caps off an evening that feels magical regardless of how many times you have seen it.
